Rockin’ Thursday LXXIV

Today I’m featuring “These Dreams” by the American rock band Heart. The song was released in 1986 and became the band’s first to top the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.1

I’m planning to pause my Rockin’ Thursday posts for a few months while I take on an interesting project inspired by a post from Dr. Gerald Stein titled “The Questions We Don’t Ask.” If you’re not already following him, I highly recommend you do.

I started Rockin’ Thursday back in February 2024 with Heart, so it feels appropriate to end, for now, with Heart, my favorite band.

Let me tell you a little about the project before posting today’s video.

Dr. Stein began his post this way:

“Much as we understand others, there are often things of which we aren’t aware. The painted acquaintance remains unfinished, no matter how long our association. Secrets separate — the embarrassing imperfections, the naked truth. All the uncomfortable territory the other prefers to shield, and we never inquire about. Humans, including the most intelligent, also hide shortcomings from themselves. Intelligence counts for little in such matters. Our species defends against recognizing its flaws.”

He went on to say:

“Projection is another part of our defensive toolkit, characterized by assigning our flaws to friends and strangers… Since we don’t want to reveal everything or allow the other to ask us about the guarded portion of our life, we hesitate to open the door to mutually shared intimacies.”

He listed some interesting questions that we might want to ask ourselves before questioning others.

One of his questions is: “Do these questions cause discomfort?” Absolutely! I see them as an invitation to self-inquiry and moral reflection, so I’ll be working through them in my journal and sharing some of my thoughts with you on Thursdays. We’ll see where this journey takes us.

For now, I hope you enjoy the video, and have a wonderful Rockin’ Thursday, my friends!

  1. Heart was one of my favorite bands, those women had amazing talent! I read that they learned how to play guitar when they were sick, I think with chicken pox. I will miss your Rockin Thursday column but I am sure you have a great replacement.

    1. Heart is still my favorite. I didn’t know that, what a great bit of information. I know she’s not well and is performing concerts in a wheelchair. I replaced it with a series called “The Questions We Don’t Ask.”

  2. I’ve always loved Heart’s songs, Edward. I’ll miss this series, but I love that you brought it full circle with the closing song.
Best wishes with your new project. The passage you shared is true and beautifully written. Although in my experience, people don’t tend to know when to stop once they start asking those kinds of questions. I imagine your friend also addresses that though. Then again, maybe my own experience is unique. 🙂 At any rate it’s a worthwhile project. I hope you enjoy it. Hugs.

  3. Darn I can’t get the video on my phone but I’ll listen later. This sounds like a worth endeavor with intimate questions and potential growth, Edward! I’ll look forward to it! Change is good-:)

  4. Thank you for sharing these important aspects of human relationships. Understanding and projection are often too entangled or distorted. And as a result, human relationships seem to be the most challenging area of our lives. Looking forward to more, Edward! Light and blessings to you, my friend, today and always 🙏✨

    1. Thank you, Liz. It’s a great song. About the project, I think so too. The first time I read the questions, I thought, “Wow, there are some tough ones on this list.” Sometimes we’re quick to judge others without considering our own behavior. These questions are definitely going to challenge some things.
