I read in The Economist today that Oasis, an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1991, is going back on tour. The article states, “On July 4th, Oasis, the greatest British band of their generation, will go on stage for the first time in 16 years.” It’s been a while since I’ve heard one of their songs, so I figured I’d find my favorite song from the band and feature it today.
Over the past couple of years, there has been a resurgence of their music, thanks to streaming services. Between 2019 and 2024, the band’s songs accrued 10 billion streams globally, according to the article. The song “Wonderwall” is the third most-streamed track from the 1990s on Spotify.1
That’s the song I’m featuring today. “Wonderwall” was released in 1995 and reached the US Billboard Top 10 that same year.2
I hope you enjoy the video, and have a wonderful Rockin’ Thursday, my friends!

This song is so iconic

What a blast from the past this post is, Edward! Wonderwall was one of my favorite jams in high school and college.

Yikes, I don’t know where I’ve been because I’m not familiar with them. Thanks for the introduction, Edward!

You’re welcome, Wynne. The radio played this song a lot, but I don’t think they had much promotional time, you know, like a lot of concerts and TV appearances in the U.S.

Seems like yesterday, I remember them well! Glad you brought them back for us to enjoy!

Oh my gosh. Am I the only one who can’t stand this song? I disliked it even as a teenager when it had just been released 🤣

Sadly, you’re the only one in the whole world. 😂 I’m sure there are a lot more since it only made it to number 8.

Thanks for this post, Edward. I am not really into music outside of Broadway so it’s expanding my horizons.

Oasis is a band I’m unfamiliar with, Edward … and for once I can say that this tune isn’t one on any of my playlists. That’s not to say that it won’t be. 😊

The melody feels more like a driving song, I think, especially if you’re headed to a pleasant place like a beach or a lake.

Ahhh Wonderwall !!! One of my all-time favorites too… I could listen to it on repeat and never get tired of that melody. The lyrics hit deep every time.

I find Oasis to be interesting. I knew their music back in the day, but I can’t say I followed them all that closely. Meanwhile, my son comes up to me and asks me all these questions about them. He found them online and thinks they’re amazing. Interesting when your kids start to like some of the same music. Ha. ha.

Yea, I thought it was awesome until he joked about buying a plane tix to travel from the US to London to see them in concert. He was dreaming out loud, but I was still shaking my head. “Umm, there’s school and saving for his last year.” Ha ha.

Well, good point about school and savings, but… sounds like a cool father and son trip if you ask me. 😀

I have to admit I was very tempted. And the history you gave was spot on. I’ve never played him any of their songs. But he picked up on Oasis from Social Media. He was arguing with me that they would’ve been bigger than U2 if they had stayed together. (Like you I think, I’m a child of the 80s and I grew up on U2’s early stuff and Joshua Tree, so those were fightin’ words. Ha, ha.) Funny how what’s old is new again.

Those were definitely fightin’ words, but it’s okay, he’s still learning.

The video was quite retro, vinyl in the 90s. I liked the trippy saw kinetic sculpture.

Definitely! The way they designed the stage was pretty cool.
