That is Love

I’m thrilled to continue our series featuring poems by Pedro Rodríguez Miranda, my grandfather-in-law. Today, I’m excited to share his sixth poem titled “That is Love”.

Eso es Amor

Dulce emoción en lo profundo del alma
que siente cuando ama el soñador
Un no sé qué al ver a la adorada;
Eso es amor.

Si te turbas al hablar con ella,
Si tus voces se cortan de emoción,
Si te olvidas decir lo que has pensado;
Eso es amor.

Si cuando a solas cantas o haces poemas,
Y no apartas de tu mente su visión,
Si cada estrofa es inspirada en ella;
Eso es amor.

Si te brinda fugaz una mirada,
Y de sus ojos denotas el fulgor,
Si sonríe cuando le hablas al oído;
Eso es amor.

Si cuando buscas sus manos, no rehuye,
Ni protesta si las besas con ardor,
Si en su ausencias te encuentras solo y triste;
Eso es amor.
That is Love

Sweet emotion deep within the soul
That one feels when the dreamer loves
An indescribable feeling upon seeing the beloved;
That is love.

If you become flustered when talking to her,
If your voices are choked with emotion,
If you forget to say what you've thought;
That is love.

If when alone you sing or write poems,
And her vision doesn't leave your mind,
If each stanza is inspired by her;
That is love.

If she briefly gives you a glance,
And from her eyes you sense a gleam,
If she smiles when you whisper in her ear;
That is love.

If when you seek her hands, she doesn't shy away,
Nor protests if you kiss her ardently,
If in her absence you find yourself alone and sad;
That is love.

About the Author:

Pedro Rodríguez Miranda was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, on 22 February 1930. He completed his primary and secondary education in Puerto Rico before moving to New York City to attend college when the Korean War started. He joined the Marine Corps and served four years, completing his enlistment and receiving an honorable discharge. After his service, he returned to New York City and attended college, receiving his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation, he worked for the city until 1965 when he returned to Puerto Rico. He worked as a high school teacher in Aguadilla and completed his second Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education from the University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez.

    1. You’re welcome, Michele. This is a project of love, and I appreciate the awesome feedback that I’m receiving from you and the rest of my WP community. As I mentioned to Kevin, my hope is that one of his great-grandchildren, most of whom are now English speakers, along with future generations, will find and cherish these poems, sparking their curiosity to learn more about this remarkable man and the Spanish language.
